The Domino Effect
Domino is a small, flat, rectangular block, bearing from one to six pips or dots, that forms the foundation for many different games played by matching the ends of pieces together and laying them down in lines and angular patterns. 28 dominoes make up a full set. Other names for domino include bones, cards, tiles, men, and spinners.
Most people are familiar with the traditional game of domino. The rules are simple: a player begins by placing any domino in front of him or her, then continues to place dominoes in the same way until he or she has a complete hand of dominoes. The first player to empty his or her hand wins the game.
Domino is also used to create works of art and for other entertainment purposes. Some of these creations are so elaborate that they take days to build. For example, domino artists may create curved lines, grids that form pictures when they fall, stacked walls, or 3D structures like towers and pyramids. When Hevesh sets up her most intricate displays, she spends a long time testing each section to make sure that it will work as intended. She often films her tests in slow motion, allowing her to adjust the placement of dominoes as necessary.
While the domino effect can be seen in artistic and entertainment applications, it is a crucial component to successful storytelling as well. The domino effect is the chain reaction that occurs when a single event causes another, which then leads to additional events and so on. It is this reaction that creates the tension and drama in a story.
In the late 1970s, Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino’s Pizza, wanted his company to be the premier pizza delivery company in America. He was aware that customers complained about having to wait a long time for their pizza and wanted to find a solution. He had heard that a delivery driver could go to the customer’s home or office, so he decided to test a system where a uniformed employee would deliver the pizza directly to the customer in 30 minutes or less.
Initially, the system worked well. However, the company struggled to meet demand due to the limited number of drivers available. Additionally, the employees who were responsible for delivering the pizza found that they were often driving recklessly and violating traffic laws in an effort to meet the 30-minute promise.
In response to these challenges, the company implemented a series of new policies including relaxed dress codes and leadership training programs for its employees. The company also began to listen to its employees and addressed the complaints they received through a direct line of communication. In turn, this led to better customer service and a stronger culture within the organization. These changes helped Domino’s to become a top workplace and earned them the Detroit Free Press’s Top Workplace Leadership Award. As a result, Domino’s has remained committed to its core values, especially the value of championing our customers.
