The State of Sydney Swimming Pools
For Sydneysiders, a visit to one of the city’s many sidney pools is a summer must. Serene at low tide, choppy at high, they are the original infinity pools and provide a place for swimmers to let go of their worries and enjoy the water. They are also a popular choice for winter swim clubs and can offer an alternative to a beach in the cold. However, a recent report by RLSSA has revealed that the state of our public swimming pools is dire, with hundreds of them in urgent need of upgrades. This is the news that has prompted renewed calls for government to commit to a comprehensive targeted investment strategy for community pools.
It was in the early 19th century that Sydneysiders first began to think of recreational swimming as a viable activity, with men’s and women’s separate ocean pools established at Bondi, Bronte, Coogee, Shellharbour, Kiama and Waverley. This was a result of the prevailing British notions of respectability which dictated that women should bathe at specific times while men bathed during the day.
Today, there are still a number of these aging ocean and harbourside pools around Sydney, most of which are now slated for demolition. The closure of Canterbury pool, in Sydney’s south-west, will be the latest in a long line of closures and has provoked an outpouring of dismay from local residents. “It’s the end of an era,” says lawyer Yusra Metwally, who learned to swim at the pool as a child and recalls its intoxicating smell, chlorine-soaked hair, hot chips, sunburnt skin, and long carefree days splashing and swimming with what seemed to be the entire suburb.
Despite the fact that they are showing their age, these pools retain their charm and hold a special place in the hearts of Sydneysiders. Moreover, they are accessible to people who may feel uncomfortable or unsafe swimming at a beach, and they offer a warm environment which is ideal for swimmers in winter. They are also a great place for families to relax and spend time together.
When it comes to building a pool, there are many factors that can affect the final cost. Choosing a quality pool builder is vital for navigating these costs effectively. In addition to the base price of the pool, you will also need to factor in site preparation, tip fees and crane usage. This can significantly increase the overall cost of your pool. It is important to understand these pricing dynamics when evaluating your options for pool builders in Sydney.
