While illegal gambling continues to be a problem in Singapore, the government has been able to crack down on the industry and make betting safer for citizens by introducing new systems and technologies. For example, it has worked to increase the number of channels through which citizens can place bets by launching new products such as Toto and 4D. It has also worked to improve customer service and reduce the reliance on triads and illegal bookkeepers by implementing an IP based call center and secure e-payment infrastructure.
Founded in 1968, Singapore Pools views itself as an IT-enabled business and is a leader in developing innovative technology to enhance its customers’ digital experience. Its latest initiative is to migrate its on-premises applications monitoring system to the Oracle Cloud Observability and Management Platform (OCI). This will enable the legal lottery and sports betting operator to monitor, analyse and manage multiple applications with greater visibility and automation through a single dashboard. It will also allow it to resolve issues within minutes instead of hours, reducing troubleshooting times by half.
The company also contributes to the community by supporting arts, charity, sports and the environment through its sponsorship of events such as the Business Times Corporate Golf League. It has also forged a strong partnership with the National Gallery of Singapore, which it funds to help preserve and showcase its collection.
Yeo’s team has also set up forums for staff to share their opinions and suggestions, which have been incorporated into the company’s ongoing strategy. Moreover, it has been working to build the team’s capabilities by training staff and empowering them to take on more responsibility and lead initiatives.
This month, we sat down with Yeo to discuss change management and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as his ongoing digital transformation strategy at Singapore Pools. Yeo is leading the company’s shift from a legacy organisation to an agile, digitally empowered business, and we look forward to hearing more about the exciting developments at the state-owned gambling organisation.
