Winners of the Sidney Prize

When the world’s at its most chaotic, a great read is often just what we need. At times like this, we’re grateful for the long-form essays that stand athwart the whirlwind, yelling stop, as the rest of us scramble to keep up. Every year, New York Times columnist David Brooks publishes a list of his Sidney Prize winners, and this morning, we were delighted to see our own NAS president Peter Wood among his picks.

The annual Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize, open to writers globally, celebrates original fiction themed loosely around the notion of travel. The winner receives a first prize of $5000, and two runners-up will have their stories published in Overland. The competition is open for entries until April 30.

A lyrical and thoughtful look at a Chinese Jewish family as they celebrate both Rosh Hashanah in fall and Lunar New Year in early spring. With warm illustrations evoking paper cutting traditions in both cultures, this lovely book illuminates how these two holidays can come together to form one very special celebration.

Named in memory of the renowned author and All-of-a-Kind Family series creator, this award honors titles for children and teens that meet high literary standards and authentically portray Jewish life. The 2022 winners were announced at LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience, Jan. 21 – 24.

Established in 1968 by Ruth Edelstein Barish, this prize honors the late Sidney Edelstein, founder of the Dexter Chemical Corporation and 1988 recipient of SHOT’s Leonardo da Vinci award. This prize recognizes excellence in the writing of a scholarly work in the history of technology.
