What is a Singapore Prize?

A singapore prize is an award given to someone who does very well in a particular field. It can come in the form of cash or a trophy. These awards are usually given by government agencies and they can be very important for the person who wins them. The winners of these awards can become role models in their fields and help others to follow in their footsteps.

The winner of the 2024 Singapore Literature Prize received a cash prize, a trophy, and a 12-month gift code to audiobook platform Storytel. This year’s shortlist included four historical non-fiction titles by Kamaladevi Aravindan, including Sembawang, which explores a Singapore estate, and The Merdeka Song, which examines the politics of detention. It also includes a history of the Botanic Gardens and a book on the Bukit Ho Swee fire by NUS historians Yong Shu Hoong and Susan Lim.

In a rare move, a female writer was awarded the Singapore literature prize in the English category. In a speech posted on Facebook, poet Grace Chia said the fact that the prize went to two male poets “reeks of engendered privilege and reinforces the notion that men’s narratives are more worthy of this prestigious award”.

The inaugural Dr Alan HJ Chan Spirit of Singapore Book Prize was launched in April. The prize aims to recognise publications that champion mindsets and values that are important in shaping Singapore, such as diversity, religious harmony and meritocracy. It is organised by SUSS and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).

Innovators and entrepreneurs in the food and beverage sector can now compete for the Vogue Singapore x BMW Innovation Prize 2023, which was announced on Wednesday (20 Aug). The winners will receive a cash prize of up to S$70,000, as well as media coverage in Vogue Singapore magazine and feedback from business leaders. They will also be introduced to potential investors to accelerate their projects.

The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize was founded by philanthropists to honour cities that demonstrate foresight and good governance in tackling their urban challenges and bring about social, economic and environmental benefits to their citizens. The prize was inaugurated in 2014 and is held every biennially. This year’s awards ceremony will be hosted in Singapore, marking the first time that the event will take place outside of London and Boston. The prize will be accompanied by special events and activities for participants, including a global forum and local activations. It will also feature performances by internationally renowned artists and musicians.
